This grassy threshold is an intervention that was needed as a transition between the "water" and "forest" areas of the Tot Spot. As nature would have it, the Water's Edge is an environment where tall grasses grow and native wildlife flourish. Due to the existing conditions of the space, the design for this threshold had to be very thin and noninvasive to the circulation paths. In order to do this, we chose to layer up plywood pieces to give the feeling of depth and create visual interest for children. The animals we chose were all native to Indiana and the cattails act as interactive, tactile objects. In addition to this, one of the cattails acts as a head protector to prevent children from hitting their head as they crawl through the grass.
